HISTORY

The Iron & Steel industry in India is experiencing rapid growth and faces significant challenges related to energy consumption, product quality, and productivity. As India moves toward becoming the world’s second-largest steel producer, the demand for highly skilled manpower is rising sharply. Despite large companies having in-house R&D facilities, the interdisciplinary nature of steel research and the need for advanced laboratories and experienced researchers make academic institutions ideal for long-term research.

To meet this demand, the Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology (CoEST) was established at IIT Bombay within the Department of Metallurgical Engineering & Materials Science (MEMS). Inaugurated on 29 June 2014, the Centre is partially funded by the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, and supported by major industry players such as JSW Steel and Tata Steel.

The CoEST aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry by focusing on industry-relevant R&D, developing skilled manpower, offering consultancy, organizing training programs and international conferences, and fostering collaboration across institutions.

Message from the Director

I am incredibly proud to see how the Centre of Excellence in Steel Technology (CoEST) has grown since its inception in 2014 with initial support from the Ministry of Steel, Government of India. What began as a new initiative has blossomed into a self-sufficient, financially strong, and dynamic hub for steel research and innovation.

When CoEST was founded, its vision was to support India's pursuit of global steel leadership through research and development, with a strong focus on innovation and skill development. Today, that vision is more critical than ever, especially with the call for Atmanirbhar Bharat.

CoEST has delivered significant value to the steel industry, assisting integrated steel plants, special steel producers, and induction furnace manufacturers alike. Our success is greatly enhanced by our outstanding faculty, a group of over 30 experts from across the Institute who make us one of the largest academic teams focused on Steel Technology in India, and arguably in the world.

Furthermore, the unique synergy with our M.Tech. programs with specialisations in Steel Technology, Corrosion Science and Engineering, Computational Materials Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering —the distinct programs in the country, make CoEST a powerful and relevant research partner for the Indian steel industry. As our research expands to embrace sustainability for the industry, I wish the Centre full speed ahead.

I invite all our partners in the steel industry to visit us and forge new collaborations. Together, we can continue to shape the future of Steel Technology and its conjoining focused areas towards achieving ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’.
